Republic Liberation Day and Saint Agatha Day
Every 5 Februar
San Marino celebrates each year the feast of Saint Agatha, patroness of the city of Catania and co-patroness of the Republic.
This tradition dates back to February 5, 1740, when Cardinal Enriquez, sent by the Holy See, restored the autonomy and freedom that Cardinal Alberoni had attempted to undermine in the preceding months.
Since then, the occasion has been commemorated with an evocative ceremony and procession that begins in Borgo Maggiore and winds its way to the Basilica of the Saint in San Marino's Historic Center, starting at 2:30 PM.
